Original Mountain Hemlock Illustration.
This tree is complicated, intricate, and was drawn on the rim of Crater Lake National Park when I was their fall Artist in Resident. It became a big conversation with some amazing 4th-grade young ladies. We talked about how to draw, what it's like to be an artist full time, how I learned to draw, and lots of other questions about dreams and fears.
It was also the first time I was referred to as an artist, not the career I received both my degrees in, but the just plain and simple, ARTIST. My friend Nico and the AIR coordinator John helped me get more comfortable with calling myself an artist, no disclaimer or buts just ARTIST. The concept that this wasn't a hobby it is a career and even though I am self-taught doesn't matter or take away from my talent.
There is a lot of love and growth that went into the creation of this piece and I am so excited to share it with someone. This piece isn't just a scientific tree illustration, this piece embodies me as an artist coming into my gift, a little wind and snow swept, with some odd looking branches, but deeply rooted along a fragile cliff edge.
