I am thrilled to introduce you to the US Ecoregion and Public Land Map.
This is a great way to see all of our Public Lands on one map and mark off the National Parks you have visited!
If you are into ecology this map also has all of the ecoregions across the country, helping you visually see the changes in the landscapes you are visiting. Scroll down to learn more!
What are Ecoregions?
Okay the outdorker is coming out now, here is one definition (which is on the poster), “Ecological regions can be identified by analyzing the patterns and composition of biotic and abiotic phenomena that affect or reflect differences in ecosystem quality and integrity (Omernik 1987, 1995). These phenomena include geology, physiography, vegetation, climate, soils, land use, wildlife, and hydrology.” (Omernik and Griffith, 2014)
I think ecoregions are most useful from a visual standpoint because as you see them on the map they can show you where you might see differences in soils, vegetation, topography, hydrology, and more.
They help us better understand why when traveling to certain places, like the area around Bend, OR there are vastly different landscapes in close proximity, it's because there are 4 or more ecoregions that converge in this area.
*This image does not include BLM land in order to best show you the ecoregions.*
Mark off the National Parks as you visit!
63 National Park Badge stickers are included with your order.
The stickers are a great way for you and your family to visually see where you have gone and plan out where you want to visit next!
The stickers are a lovely small green badge that compliments the map! Can't wait for you to see the sticker sheets!
Land Acknowledgement
You will find on the bottom of the map is the land acknowledgment. It is important to acknowledge who's land we are recreating on when visiting these Public Lands and how the Indigenous and Native people want us to interact with the land.
Here is a portion of the text on the map:
This map acknowledges that our Public Lands are stolen land of Indigenous and Native people. We support the Land Back Movement. To learn more visit LandBack.org or NDNCollective.org. Although this map doesn’t include Land Acknowledgments for each Public Land, there will be another map, we encourage everyone to research the Indigenous Tribes, who’s land you are recreating on, when in each of the Public Lands labeled.
Full text is on the map explaining some items to think about when creating your own land acknowledgments.
